Airport Tips & Quick Reference Guide to Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO)

Rome Fiumicino Airport Terminals (FCO)

Information compiled by David Enrich, aviation and airport guide expert since 1999.

Introduction and Historical Background

Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport, the main international gateway to Rome and the largest airport in Italy, opened in 1961 to replace the older Rome Ciampino Airport as the city’s primary aviation hub. Over the decades the airport has undergone several expansions to accommodate increasing passenger demand and long-haul international traffic. Today, Fiumicino handles more than 50 million passengers annually, making it one of the busiest airports in Southern Europe and a major hub for ITA Airways.

The airport complex currently operates Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 as its main passenger terminals, while Terminal 5 is used occasionally for specific international operations and security-controlled departures. The terminals are connected through internal corridors and shuttle services, allowing passengers to transfer easily between them.

Fiumicino Airport is large but well signposted. Allow extra time when transferring between terminals, especially during busy travel seasons.

Terminal 1 (T1)

Terminal 1 mainly serves domestic and Schengen flights, particularly those operated by ITA Airways and several European carriers.

Layout and Levels

Terminal 1 includes several passenger levels:

  • Departures Level – check-in counters, security screening, and access to boarding gates
  • Airside Level – boarding gates, shopping areas, restaurants, and passenger lounges
  • Arrivals Level – baggage claim and ground transportation access

This terminal was recently renovated as part of Fiumicino’s modernization program and now features modern architecture, larger passenger areas, and upgraded retail zones.

If you are flying within the Schengen Area, your flight will most likely depart from Terminal 1.

Shops and Retail

Passengers will find a wide variety of shops in Terminal 1, including:

Travel Essentials

  • Convenience stores
  • Pharmacies
  • Travel accessories

Fashion and Luxury

  • Italian fashion brands
  • Designer accessories
  • Jewelry stores

Electronics and Books

  • Travel gadgets
  • Books and magazines
  • Electronics accessories

Many Italian fashion stores at FCO sell products at airport tax-free prices, which can sometimes be cheaper than downtown Rome.

Restaurants and Cafés

Some well-rated dining options in Terminal 1 include:

Eataly

  • Italian cuisine, pasta, pizza, and wine
  • Location: Departures area
  • Typical hours: 06:00 – 22:00

Venchi Chocolate & Gelato

Italian airports often have excellent coffee. Even quick cafés usually serve high-quality espresso and cappuccino.

Terminal 3 (T3)

Terminal 3 is the largest terminal at Fiumicino Airport and handles most international and intercontinental flights, including routes to North America, Asia, and the Middle East.

Layout and Zones

Terminal 3 contains:

  • Check-in hall with airline counters
  • Security checkpoints
  • Passport control for non-Schengen flights
  • International departure gates
  • Duty free and luxury shopping areas

After security and passport control, passengers enter a large international departure hall with extensive retail and dining options.

Long-haul flights typically depart from Terminal 3 gates, so arrive early to allow time for passport control and security screening.

Duty Free

The main duty-free area in Terminal 3 offers a large selection of products including:

  • Perfumes and cosmetics
  • Alcohol and tobacco
  • Luxury fashion accessories
  • Italian gourmet food and wine

The duty-free zone is located after security and passport control in the international departures area.

Italian airports often sell local wines, olive oil, and gourmet products, making them good last-minute souvenirs.

Restaurants and Bars

Terminal 3 offers a wide selection of dining options.

La Terrazza

  • Italian dishes and wine bar
  • Location: International departures
  • Menu: pasta, pizza, salads

McDonald’s

  • Fast food

Wine Bar by Ferrari

Restaurants near the international gates often stay open later, which is useful for overnight departures.

Terminal 5 (T5)

Terminal 5 is a specialized terminal used occasionally for selected international flights requiring additional security screening, often serving routes to specific destinations outside the Schengen area.

Passengers departing from Terminal 5 usually:

  1. Check in at Terminal 3

  2. Pass security screening

  3. Transfer to Terminal 5 via shuttle bus

Because it operates only for selected flights, many travelers may never use Terminal 5.

Always check your boarding pass or airport monitors, as Terminal 5 departures are announced clearly.

Transfers Between Terminals at Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport

Passengers traveling through Rome Fiumicino Airport can move easily between terminals thanks to pedestrian connections and a free airport shuttle service. Most terminals are located within the same terminal complex, making transfers relatively simple.

Transfers between Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3

Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are directly connected through internal corridors within the airport building. Because the distance between them is relatively short, passengers can walk easily between these terminals following the airport signage.

Walking between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 usually takes 5–10 minutes, depending on the exact gate location.

Transfers to Terminal 5

Terminal 5 is located southwest of Terminal 3, slightly farther from the main terminal complex. Passengers traveling to Terminal 5 must use the free airport shuttle bus.

Key details of the shuttle service:

  • Operates throughout the year
  • Runs approximately every 15 minutes
  • Connects Terminal 3, Terminal 5, parking areas, and the Cargo City area

Most passengers departing from Terminal 5 first check in at Terminal 3, then take the shuttle bus to reach the departure gates.

Always check your boarding pass or airport screens to confirm the correct terminal before heading to security.
